With his 16-track album Cornbread Mafia, the Kentucky songwriter turns family history and country living into songs built for connection.
Before Sticktight had a guitar, he had a name worth putting on a record. At two years old, visiting country singer John Michael Montgomery's farm with his family, he emerged from the woods covered in clinging burrs. Montgomery laughed and suggested calling him "Sticktight." The nickname held.
Raised in Willisburg, Kentucky, Sticktight grew up growing corn, hunting and fishing. Music caught his attention early: a guitarist on television could stop an otherwise restless toddler in his tracks. His grandparents supplied a toy guitar; he supplied the imitation.
On elementary-school journeys with his father, Waylon Jennings' greatest hits became essential listening. What fascinated him was Waylon's authenticity. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels helped expand his musical vocabulary, with Travis Tritt also shaping the blend of country, blues and Southern rock he now calls his own.
His strongest material begins close to home. "Hammonds Creek Road" draws on his great-grandfather's life as a moonshiner in Anderson County, Kentucky. "Anna," highlighted on his Museboat artist page, reaches into darker territory. Sticktight describes it as a ghost story inspired by the 1825 Kentucky Tragedy and accounts of a woman's apparition near the cemetery where she and her husband were buried. Family memory and local folklore give his songwriting characters with something at stake.
Finding that voice took original writing. Learning other musicians' songs gave him a foundation; making his own helped him understand what he wanted to say. Producer and recording engineer Danny Bailey encouraged that independence, while teaching him to reconsider a lyric, instrumental part or vocal phrase before declaring it finished.
His latest album, Cornbread Mafia, grew over three years. Originally conceived as a four-song EP in 2023, the project expanded around touring, including three months performing aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Joy. Twelve additional songs written and recorded during 2024 and 2025 brought the collection to sixteen tracks.
Alongside the creative growth came practical lessons. A disappointing first publishing deal taught him to investigate promises and choose collaborators carefully. Replacing departing band members taught him how much work goes into rebuilding a cohesive live group.
He still wants to deliver an energetic show, but his ambitions increasingly centre on what listeners carry away from the songs. Asked which accomplishment matters most, he points to someone telling him his music helped them through a difficult time.
That is the connection he wants to keep making as his audience grows: songs grounded in the life he knows, leaving room for other people to recognise their own.
